On Learning the State’s Bridges Are In Need of Repair
Because they carry
so much weight
gracefully
we leap
in faith
from here
to there without
a care for swimming.
But once we have been taught
that grace alone is not
the whole story
we worry
inspect
shut down
pursue alternatives
that might prove to be safer.
Until we learn to be afraid
we aren’t. Once having
struggled,
kicked
and stroked
we no longer trust
our will alone to bridge
dark and troubling waters.
