The Way Women Walk
poems by
Marcia F. Brown
1st Place Winner in the 1st Annual
Sheltering Pines Press Poetry Chapbook Competition
Of the winning chapbook our final judge Henry Braun writes:
"Marcia Brown's poems are for the eye. They let us look
at her world in a distinctive way. And they're for the ear
through the pacing of the lines; in, for one example, the title poem:
The light clip of their shoes I love,
their languid waltz of approaching.
I hear their soft arpeggio-talk
in unseen spaces of dark.
People other than the teller herself grace and haunt many of these poems,
from her elegy for Hepburn (1907-2003), both poignant and funny, to "our bridge-besotted mothers"
in "My Mother's Bridge Night." Letting others be so present, such negative capability, seems rarer
nowadays. Readers, spread the word!"
